Summary

Summary

 

Curatorial Assistant in the Curatorial Division within the federal government. The individual assist’s curators in the following areas as they relate to the visual arts: research, exhibitions, and development and management of collections.  The incumbent performs tasks and assignments that typically include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of American art history and schools of art, especially contemporary, enabling informed discussion about art and its cultural significance and origin.
  • Knowledge of the overall goals and objectives of ART, the sequence and timing of key program events and milestones, and methods for evaluating Office efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of relationships of ART with art museums, galleries, and private collectors.

 

Essential Functions

 

Research Duties

  • At the direction of curators, incumbent conducts research related to exhibitions and publications in various topics in American and international art and culture.
  • Incumbent compiles and enters data regarding loaned and acquired art work to maintain and cultivate the program’s database, The Museum System (TMS) including obtaining, filing, and inputting digital images.
  • The incumbent supports curators’ communications with scholars, curators, galleries, artists, foundations, and museum professionals and is aware of current research in the field.

 

Collection Duties

  • Assist in the documentation of objects in the collection through research for website posts and exhibition catalogues. Supports curators and registrars in addressing conservation issues as they arise.
  • Assists the Chief Curator, curators, and other staff members in processing the necessary forms and data related to donations. Follows up with donors and dealers as assigned by curators to support donation process.


Exhibition Duties

  • Incumbent assists curators in scheduling and preparing for consultations with U.S. Ambassadors to develop exhibition topics and assess feasibility of exhibition concepts (e.g. loans, budget, safety and conservation of objects special installation problems and publications).
  • Assists curators in executing approved exhibition plans within strict timelines. The incumbent is responsible for providing needed support in the production of serious exhibitions with aesthetic merit as well as educational value that serve the goals of American cultural diplomacy.
  • Assists curators in assembling and formatting label text for exhibition wall panels, obtaining digital images from artists, generating loan agreements and other exhibition-related administrative duties as assigned.


Administrative Duties

  • Assists with exhibition and installation program. As assigned by Chief Curator and curators, tracks scheduling of exhibitions and installations. Follows up on selection of objects and obtains necessary data to generate standard loan agreements. Maintains TMS for tracking loans and exhibitions.
  • Participates in acquisitions process. Assists curators in preparing supporting documentation for acquisitions proposals made by curators. Attends internal review meetings and ensures paperwork is routed appropriately and follows up with meeting notes.
  • The incumbent handles office tasks for curatorial staff, such as filing, generating reports and PowerPoint presentations, scheduling and setting up for meetings including audiovisual equipment, and reordering supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • May be requested and required to participate in Proposal Support functions due to expertise

Competencies 

  • Experience in advanced administrative tasks such as filing, generating reports and image based presentations, scheduling, and managing supply needs.
  • Proficiency in the following software programs: Microsoft Office Suite, The Museum System, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and critical research and present findings clearly and cohesively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be highly organized.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • The work is essentially sedentary but requires some physical exertion, including moderate to heavy lifting on occasion.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time.
  • Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Expresses or exchanges ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly.
  • Frequently moves standard office equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to work indoor conditions 90% of the time.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Hours for this full time position will be the core hours of the Department of State: 40 hours a week, 8 hours per day.

 

Travel

Travel approximately up to 10%

 

Experience

  • Proven graphic designing experience
  • A strong portfolio of illustrations or other graphics

Education

Bachelors Degree in a related field•.
